Executive Director Job Description
General Purpose
The Executive Director role will serve as a professional key contact to the community and manage daily operations of the Northern Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce (NVBCC). The Executive Director (ED) is directly accountable to the NVBCC Board of Directors (BOD).
- The ED is a contracted position
- The ED is a non-voting member of the BOD and is expected to attend and be an active participant in all BOD meetings
- The ED employee performance evaluation is to be completed annually by the BOD and will focus primarily on the following listed duties. Evaluations will also provide appropriate job and personal development planning.
- The following activities are to be managed by the ED in support of the NVBCC Mission Statement.
The Board of Directors sets forth the mission and direction of the organization, and the Executive Director moves the direction forward to fulfill that mission and annual goals.

NVBCC has a steady focus on membership attraction and retention while providing programs and resources designed to help regional black businesses thrive. NVBCC is a non-profit non-governmental, membership-driven organization with a strong contingency of over 375 members.
Responsibilities
The core duties and responsibilities of the Executive Director position include, but are not limited to, the following:
General:
- Ensure excellent quality service and communication as a representative of the Chamber.
- Must be innovative, energetic, and ready to engage the Board, current and new members.
- Continually seek opportunities to promote NVBCC.
- Collaborate with other organizations to promote economic development opportunities and the advancement of minority businesses.
- Coordinate with the Director of Operations & Community Engagement (DOCE to sustain and grow programs and services.
- Serve as ex-officio to the BOD, and committees to ensure overall success of the chamber.
- Serve on community organization Boards and Committees as directed by the BOD.
Administrative:
- Prepare and distribute agenda for BOD bimonthly meetings, while maintaining records of previous minutes and agendas.
- Maintain the financial stability of the Chamber and perform proper accounting practices by overseeing the annual budget, monthly financial reports, accounts payable and receivable and with a contracted bookkeeper.
- Maintain documented, up-to-date office procedures and maintain legal and historical file archives.
- Research and execute new revenue streams for the chamber under the direction of the BOD.
- Assist in the development of office procedures and practices, handling of mail and other correspondence and responding appropriately by mail or telephone, and promote security for all files, legal and historical documents.
Membership & Development:
- Recruit, welcome and visit new and potential businesses located in the area.
- Visit and/or contact all members in accordance with the membership recruit and retention goals.
- Maintain a membership and prospect database.
- Lead the Annual Membership Drive, including assisting with Membership Marketing materials (including application, outreach and website). Must have and maintain basic and current knowledge of the businesses and communities of the Northern Virginia region.
- Encourage members to consider additional enhancement opportunities with their annual chamber membership.
Events:
- Monitor professional, educational and legislative development at a local, state and national level and coordinate NVBCC activities in response to these developments.
- Champion fund-raising efforts. Work with the BOD to identify, select and plan festivals, special events and activities that promote local business, community and civic functions. Success of these events is measured by remaining within budget spending constraints and accomplishing fundraising goals
- Represent the Chamber at various community events, meetings and special appearances while maintaining the highest level of professionalism
- Plan/coordinate festivals and chamber events with the assigned committee, and monitor/coordinate updates to the Chamber website.
- Coordinate volunteer and schedules for events,
Marketing
- Composes, types, and edits correspondence, reports, newsletters, and other material requiring judgment as to content, accuracy, and completeness.
- Coordinate marketing of events with assigned committee. Oversee an informative, attractive and accurate Chamber website
Requirements:
- Post-secondary education preferred,
- Proven experience coordinating and event planning,
- Ability to effectively communicate through written materials and public speaking
- Proficient in MS Office and knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, including mail merges and database management,
- Knowledge of basic accounting and QuickBooks software
- Knowledge of WordPress CRM websites,
- Must have the ability to interact with the public and fellow employees in a tactful and pleasant manner and must be able to handle stressful situations,
- Experience of non-profit and financial management and development.
